ThAct Jude the obscure

Hello learners. I am writing this blog as part of thinking activity which assign by Dilip sir. In this blog i will try to discuss signicnce of epigraph written by "letter killeth" , story of bhamasur in reference of jude the obscure.

➡️  is it possible to connect the meaning epigraph Esdras at the beginning of the first chapter of the novel and the myth of bhamasur?

The esdras epigraph at the beginning of the novel alludes to the fleeting nature of human desires and bring similarity,  the Bhasmasur myth in which Character's disire lead to self -destruction. Jude's pursuit of his desires and the tragic consequences that follow.

Themes of fleeting desires and their consequences are central to the novel's narrative are as jude 's aspirations for education love and social acceptance ultimately lead to his downfall suffe.

Certainly, in "Jude the Obscure" by Thomas Hardy, you can draw comparisons between the themes of transience, desires, and consequences found in the 'Esdras' epigraph and the Bhasmasur myth.

1. Transciense.:

The 'Esdras' epigraph emphasizes the fleeting nature of human existence, echoing the novel's exploration of impermanence. Jude's life is marked by constant change and uncertainty, as he strives for a better life but is often thwarted by external circumstances. Similarly, the Bhasmasur myth illustrates the ephemeral nature of desires, as Bhasmasur's desire for destructive power leads to his own destruction. This transience is a recurring theme in the novel as Jude and other characters grapple with the impermanence of their dreams and aspirations.

2.Desires:

Both the epigraph and the Bhasmasur myth highlight the theme of desires. In 'Esdras,' desires are described as vanities, which can be seen in Jude's aspirations for education, social mobility, and love. These desires drive the characters but also lead to their downfall. In the Bhasmasur myth, the character's desire for power and control is similarly destructive. In the novel, Jude's desires for education and a forbidden love affair with Sue are powerful driving forces that shape the course of his life and the lives of those around him.

3.consequencence:

The 'Esdras' epigraph hints at the consequences of human desires, suggesting that many desires lead to nothing. This idea resonates in the novel as characters often face severe consequences for their desires. Jude's pursuit of education and his romantic entanglements have profound consequences on his life and the lives of others. Similarly, in the Bhasmasur myth, the character's desire has dire consequences, leading to his own demise.

Jude's failure in cristministerand sue 's wrong choice of partner is show character's defet. This situation of novel deal with struggle and defeat.and same themes we can find in some other characters of novel as well.

After deep discussion, hardship,  struggle all the characters get downfall. It shows that

"Tragedy of unfufilled aims"

➡️ Jude the obscure : Hardy's symbolic indiciment of Christianity.

Jude the Obscure" by Thomas Hardy has indeed been a subject of literary analysis and critique, with some scholars and critics, including Norman Holland, Jr., examining it as a symbolic indictment of Christianity. Norman Holland, Jr. is a prominent literary critic known for his work in psychological approaches to literature. His interpretation of the novel might focus on psychological and symbolic elements that highlight the critical stance on Christianity within the text.

Hardy is saying though jude other that the only part of Christianity warth saving is not an ideal of sacrifice, but rather the notion that somehow we can make this life under fate's rule more bearable by love for our fellow men.

Norman holland and some other critics have explore that what is jude and other characters' dilemma, effects of religion and social life. There are many social issues with characters are struggling in whole story.

We can notice that how character are restricted in some affairs, some forbidden things and also the effect of Victorian era is also there.
